Opportunity Snapshot

This newly created role offers you the opportunity to make a significant impact as you lead a high profile initiative to enhance employee safety and risk programs throughout California. This initiative has strong support from senior leaders and your successes will be noticed. While the initiative is just under way, you will be able to showcase your creativity and leadership skills as you implement it in a wide variety of facilities and operations, from group homes providing direct care to mobile community programs. You'll support our corporate mission of providing people with innovative, quality services and supports that lead to growth and independence.

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have deep knowledge of safety and solid experience developing, implementing, and managing safety programs. We're looking for a professional with a collegial and collaborative approach and the flexibility to resolve safety issues creatively in diverse environments. You'll not only to be able to develop programs, but also to influence and motivate others to embrace those programs.

Founded in 1980, The MENTOR Network is a national network of local human services providers offering an array of quality, community-based services to adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, acquired brain injury and other catastrophic injuries and illnesses, and to youth with emotional, behavioral and medically complex challenges as well as their families. Our strategy of marrying our mission and values with business discipline and capital creation is unique, enabling the organization to invest in systems that make excellence possible -- and we apply those systems in a way that directly benefits people with a range of needs, with impressive results.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in Safety, Human Resources or other related field.
  • Experience managing safety programs as a primary responsibility (as opposed to having responsibility for safety as one part of a larger set of supervisory or managerial responsibilities).
  • Experience working with and facilitating safety committees. Quick question for you - click here
  • Strong analytical, organizational and negotiating skills.
  • The ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Effectiveness both as a team member and individual contributor.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation.
  • A proven ability to solve problems, take risks, inspire confidence and facilitate communication.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification.
Preferred but not required:
  • Safety experience in human services or healthcare environments.
  • Experience with safety issues related to lifting, over exertions, motor vehicles and/or slips and falls.
You also will need to be willing and able to travel overnight up to 25% of the time. You'll spend more than half your time in the field.

What's in It for You

High visibility impact -- while safety programs exist in our California operations, the initiative you'll lead will take them to the next level. This initiative is one of our highest corporate priorities, and you'll top level support. You also will contribute at a broader level as a member of our corporate Employee Safety & Risk (ESR) team.

Career development -- we expect the ESR team to expand moving forward, meaning we'll need leaders who have proven their ability to deliver results. In addition your success in this role could set you up to pursue opportunities in other areas of Human Resources or even Operations.

Diverse challenges -- we have more than 80 locations in California, and you'll showcase your innovation resolving issues in a variety of operations, including adult day care, group homes, intermediate (medical) care facilities, vocational training, transportation programs and more.

Great environment -- the core competency of the MENTOR Network is helping people flourish and grow. We apply that competency in our corporate culture as well, promoting a growth-oriented, creative environment peopled by creative thinkers with varying perspectives whose one common trait is a commitment to our mission.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect as well as some pleasant surprises, such as an equity program.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Network Manager, Employee Safety & Risk, you will provide direction to a Workers' Compensation Administrator. You'll work closely with the California operations team, which includes the Executive Director, three regional Directors and their staffs. In the field you'll interact with Program and Facilities Managers who typically oversee several units.

Right off the bat you'll focus on two key objectives:

  • Assuming ownership of and accountability for our recently launched statewide initiative that clarifies and assigns responsibilities for various aspects of safety to specific individuals in operations. Pivotal to your success here will be your ability to act as a resource and partner to these individuals to help them develop and implement effective programs and solutions.Quick question for you - click here
  • Establishing and managing a state safety committee, with a goal of handing it off down the road to an appropriate member of the operations staff.

A sampling of your more specific activities:

  • Developing, implementing and administering safety policies, procedures and practices in partnership with State Operations, Human Resource and Quality Assurance Managers.
  • Developing, implementing and administering accident investigations and corrective actions in partnership with State Operations, Human Resource and Quality Assurance Managers.
  • Managing the State Workers' Compensation program by ensuring that claims are properly filed and administered, developing claims strategies and assisting Operations Managers with claim monitoring and return to work programs.
  • Designing and delivering training for employees, supervisors, managers and members of the Safety Committee.
  • Assisting State Operations Managers in the integration of safety procedures and practices into daily operations.
  • Providing leadership and technical guidance for the Safety Committee.
  • And more.

Keys to Success

You will need to "sell" the new initiative via influence and motivation, helping operations staff see the benefits of embracing policies and solutions. A rule-bound "safety police" approach will not work in our culture. In almost every situation a large number of stakeholders will be providing input, and you'll need to listen to them all, negotiate differences and drive consensus. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Employee Safety & Risk Manager, you will:
  • Be willing to take risks and employ unconventional thinking; one solution simply won't work in all our diverse operations.
  • Know when to bend and when to stand your ground, and also how to maintain trust and respect even when you are standing your ground.
  • Achieve your goals independently; you'll have the support of the Network Manager, ESR as well as the entire ESR team, but you'll also need to make things happen on your own.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

We are an equal opportunity employer. EOE M/F/D/V
