| The MENTOR Network Career Opportunities |
Opportunity Snapshot
This position offers you the opportunity to "own" the human resources (HR) function for 18,000 employees across 15 states, partnering with the Division President in running a large, multi-state division. You will play a key change agent role in a corporate initiative to implement a new level of strategic HR engagement, and your successes will be visible to our senior leadership. In addition to showcasing your entrepreneurial spirit and big-picture vision, you will also be instrumental in our ability to deliver on our corporate mission of providing innovative, quality services to individuals within community based settings.
Assuming leadership of the Redwood HR team, you will assess the opportunities within the Redwood division and then develop and implement a strategic plan that integrates corporate as well as division-specific initiatives. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant and broad HR leadership experience in organizations involving multiple smaller units with hourly front line employees distributed over a wide geography, such as in the health care, retail or restaurant industries. While you'll need experience in all aspects of HR, strong employee relations (ER) skills are essential. We're looking for an innovative thought leader with a demonstrated ability to drive meaningful and lasting change.
Founded in 1980, The MENTOR Network is a national network of local human services providers offering an array of quality, community-based services to adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, acquired brain injury and other catastrophic injuries and illnesses; to youth with emotional, behavioral and medically complex challenges as well as their families; and to elders in need of home care. The Redwood Group, primarily operates community-based group homes for intellectually disabled adults and children.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
Preferred but not required:
You also will need to be able to travel nationally up to 30% of the time. We expect this percentage to diminish over time, and for the most part you will make the decisions about when and where to travel. We expect it will include the largest states (California, Florida, Arizona, and others) and where there is the greatest need for your support.
What's in It for You
High visibility, broad impact -- you'll partner with the Senior Vice President (SVP) of HR, to whom you will report, in transforming the HR function from a transactional one into a highly strategic one.
Entrepreneurial autonomy -- You will need to ensure that regional and local HR efforts are targeted to the unique needs of each community and each market. At the same time, The MENTOR Network is one of shared values and resources, and you'll have access to our corporate Centers of Excellence as well as to senior executives.
Great work environment -- the core competency of the Redwood Group is creating environments in which people can flourish and grow. We apply that competency in our corporate culture as well, promoting a growth-oriented, creative environment peopled by creative thinkers with varying perspectives whose one common trait is a commitment to our mission.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect as well as some pleasant surprises, such as an equity program.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
The Edina Minnesota office is a "secondary" headquarters for The MENTOR Network and division headquarters for the Redwood Group. While you will report to the SVP, based in Boston, you will work closely with the Division President in Edina and be a peer to the division's VP's of Operations. We also have a Field VP of HR supporting our other main division. Your own team is a true field HR group distributed around the country and consisting of Regional Directors, a Director of Training, Managers, and Generalists.
You will have two main goals as you come on board, although they overlap quite a bit and both support the primary objective of ensuring a high performance strategic HR function. One goal will be to collaborate with the SVP of HR in implementing corporate-wide initiatives, and the other will be to partner with the Division President to make sure the Redwood HR Group is providing value-adding support. We have some ideas about what needs to be accomplished, but you'll take those high level ideas, add your own insights, and apply them to fit in your division.
Some areas you'll focus on:
Among your other activities, you will: Keys to Success
If you are most comfortable with maintaining the status quo and solid structures and policies, this is not the position for you. This is a change agent role at every level, and we are looking for a professional who can uplift the entire HR team, both corporate and divisional, by bringing ideas and insights. At the same time, you'll need to respect the local flavor and culture of each community -- the Redwood Group helped pioneer a highly successful community-based service model that is emulated around the country, and your challenge will be to differentiate between what transactions can be standardized and what functions must be tailored to each community.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
Who We Are
Founded in 1967 as REM, the Redwood Group operates an array of services for people who need support and assistance to live in their communities. When the first REM residence opened, community living options for people with developmental disabilities were practically non-existent. Since then, the Redwood Group/REM has pioneered a system of high quality services that has advanced the community-based model of care around the country. In 2003 REM and The MENTOR Network joined together to offer even greater options for people with developmental disabilities.
The MENTOR Network is one of shared values and resources, an organization offering those who work with us and those we serve the benefits of a strong national structure. Tying The Network together is a well-defined set of policies, procedures and quality standards that create a level of support and consistency unavailable elsewhere.
Our strategy of marrying our mission and values with business discipline and capital creation is unique. The resources of The MENTOR Network enable the organization to invest in systems that make excellence possible and we apply those systems in a way that directly benefits people with a range of needs, with impressive results.
Since its founding in 1980, The MENTOR Network has never wavered from its goals of "Building Relationships. Enhancing Lives."
